I just ran out of dishwasher detergent. What can I do to finish off that load of dirty dishes before my guests arrive? If you find yourself in that situation these tips for Homemade Dish Washing Detergent may help you get out of a jam.

Here are a few ideas that were sent in to one of my other sites to help when you run out of Detergent.

Basic Recipe for Dishwasher Soap

Dishwasher soap is easy to make, and cost effective. I mix up a batch in an empty canister, and pour it in the dishwasher as needed.

Mix and use per dishwasher load:
1 Tablespoon Borax
1 Tablespoon Baking soda

OR

Mix equal parts Borax and Baking Soda, and add 2 Tablespoons per load. Increase proportion of soda for hard water. Use vinegar in the rinse cycle.

Dialing in the correct combination.

I personally tried using just baking soda, just borax, and a mixture of the two but none of those worked. What does work for me is mixing baking soda and borax with my dishwasher soap. I fill a container half full with the dishwasher soap then a quarter baking soda and quarter borax. I also use vinegar instead of Jet Dry in the rinse dispenser.
Wrote in Carroline.

Extend Dishwasher Detergent

For several months, I used a simple combination of 1/2 Borax and 1/2 baking soda and found that my dishes came out sparkling and spot free. I liked this mix because I felt it was easier on our aerobic septic system than regular dish detergent alone. However, I discovered some of the dishes were not getting totally clean (I like to just throw them in the washer with only minimal scrubbing). I began to pour a tiny amount of Cascade (bought with a coupon, of course) in the dispenser then covered it with the other mix. I am very pleased with this combination and it takes only seconds to do! I add Borax to my powdered laundry detergent as well to make it last longer. With four children, Borax and baking soda have been major dollar stretchers to our budget.
Wrote in Barbara.

Getting The Correct Amount Saves Money

We find that even the brand-name dishwasher detergent is very inexpensive when you use the “correct” amount! You only need one or two tablespoons of detergent in your dishwasher! That’s right, and 1 tablespoon is almost always enough. Your dishes will come clean without any of that chalky residue. The big box of Cascade (155 oz) that we purchase at Sam’s Club for $5.99 lasts us for one year! No kidding and we run our dishwasher an average of once per day. Our dishwasher is a 1997 model. If you have hard water you may need to use the 2-tablespoon amount more often, but not always. Today’s dishwashers are so efficient that they don’t need those both chambers filled with detergent. Save money and have cleaner dishes by using less detergent!
Wrote in Laura.

Vinegar Plus

I go to the “Dollar Store” in our area and buy their brand of dish washing detergent. It’s much cheaper then even Wal-Mart. Then in addition to the dish washing detergent, I add white vinegar. I buy it by the gallon and put it in the reservoir where you would put the “name brand” stuff. This does a wonderful job for me. If you are low on dish washing detergent you can use just the vinegar. It does a wonderful job keeping your glassware clear and clean if you have hard water in your area as well.
Wrote in Pat.

Vinegar And Pre-wash

I am the kind of gal who can’t put the dishes in the dishwasher dirty. I have to wash them first. I guess I have had too many come out with spots on them. We have hard water and I have been fighting that nasty build up of gunk. I couldn’t tell whether it was residue from my detergent or minerals. I would have to buy that dishwasher cleaner at least once every two months. I had almost given up on the dishwasher, until the light dawned on me one day. Now, since I already clean my dishes, I just put white vinegar in the drawer. Our dishes and the dishwasher have never looked so good. Also I have found less spots on my dishes. My jet dry rinse has vinegar in it also. Just make sure vinegar mixes ok with your rinse aid.
Wrote in Danny.

Baking Soda Shine

I buy the large box of Dollar General brand dishwasher powder at the local Dollar General. It is $2 and I then mix equal amounts of baking soda and the dishwasher powder. The baking soda is a great extender! By mixing the two my dishes are extra clean. The dishwashing powder and the baking soda not only makes my dishes sparkle but makes my dishwasher smell and look clean. A lot of value for just a couple of bucks!
Wrote in Sandy.

Using Washing Soda

We have used a mixture of washing soda (not baking soda) and borax. It worked for awhile and then the glasses got dingy. Then I read about adding white vinegar to the rinse cycle. Check it out. Can be found in the laundry aisle.
Many people claim to like that smell, but apparently that is the smell of 108 volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) being released into the air.
While mainly used for cleaning mortar from bricks muriatic acid also works well for cleaning silver. With acid-resistant gloves on, dip a piece of very-fine steel wool into the acid and wipe it onto the silver until it begins to shine.

If you want even less of an effort, make a silverware dip using baking soda, aluminum foil and hot water. Sit a 2′ length of aluminum foil into a plastic bucket, and pour 1/2 gallon of hot water over it. Next pour a cup of fresh baking soda into the water. Completely Submerge a piece of silver in the water, and allow it to sit for 30 minutes. Then pull out the silver, rinse it, and allow it to dry.

This method will remove many stains from sterling silver silverware, but to remove stubborn tarnish try adding a teaspoon of salt to the mixture and boiling the pan–with the silverware in it–for 2-3 minutes, making sure the water covers the silverware throughout the boiling cycle.

These methods are safe for most silverware, but for valuable heirloom pieces, you may want to consult an expert or have the silverware professionally cleaned, just to be safe.

Three 8-by-24-foot rolls will cover a typical double garage floor. According to Gladiator Garage Works, which introduced this product in 2007, once the mats are installed they will not creep, tear or wrinkle in normal use, even under the weight of automobiles.

Edges, especially those facing the garage doors could be vulnerable to curling and casual damage. Gladiator claims that a bead of silicone applied under the edges prevents the mats from lifting and keeps water from seeping in.

The non-porous and chemical-resistant material withstands common spills and the temperature extremes of the garage. When it’s time to clean the floor covering, simply sweep it off.

Sounds good to me. I just need to get my new garage built before winter comes.

Do you constantly get a runny nose and the sniffles. Do you get frequent headaches and chest congestion. It might not be that cold you though you had but instead the cause may be the poor air quality in your house.

New houses are filled with synthetic materials, and some of them can literally make you sick. Its not always that Black Mold you hear about. Plywood, particleboard, and other manufactured woods emit formaldehyde. Some stone used in concrete can release radon. Certain fiberglass insulation has the ability cause lung cancer in the same way that asbestos does. Even your carpeting can make you feel down.

What the solution? Whether you are building a new house or remodeling an old home you should follow three key principles:

Removal
Remove the items that emit toxic fumes. This is no easy matter, because everything from the floor to the roofing may contain harmful chemicals.

Isolation
There are some things that just can’t be eliminated, but you can still protect yourself. Use sealants or foilbacked drywall to separate living quarters from materials that contain harmful substances.

Ventilation
A filtered ventilation system may be the only way to insure that the air we bring indoors is clean.

Black Mold or what is referred to often as Toxic Mold are common terms used to describe a slimy, greenish black substance which can result in a very serious health risk. While toxic black mold is less common than other mold species it is far from rare. Cellulose is the only known host for the dangerous strains of Stachybotrys and Memnoniella, which produce mycotoxins. The mycotoxins grow in damp areas. Substances where this mold can be found include places where water has soaked wood. Ceiling tile, wall paneling, studs, cellulose insulation, drywall (gypsum board), carpet backing, cardboard and other items made of natural fibers such as cotton can act as a host. It can infest areas in the floors, walls and ceilings. Mold problems resulting from flooding should be treated professionally to avoid health risks. If the black mold is growing on materials that do not contain cellulose, it is unlikely that either Stachybotrys or Memnoniella are present. If you suspect Black Mold, have it tested before attempting to remove it.

Spores from dried mold are very dangerous and should be cleaned with caution. Never scrape or scratch dried mold, because the spores will become airborne and create a serious inhalation risk. A respiratory mask and eye protection are necessary and adequate clothing to prevent skin contact is recommended. Most mold infested areas are relatively small and are usually the result of small leaks or plumbing problems. If the problem is more internal such as on insulation or throughout a carpet, the only solution is to have the items professionally removed before being replaced. Moldy areas more than two feet in size are considered “heavily infested” and professional removal is strongly advised. Some insurance companies cover the cost of mold removal or remediation under certain circumstances. Check with your insurance agent to find out if you are covered.
