Here’s how to fix your Sink Pop-up Stopper Problem:

1) With a slight twist, try to lift out the stopper. If it seems to be linked to the mechanism, reach under the sink and unscrew the pivot rod retaining nut and pull out the pivot rod to disengage it.

2) Lift the stopper from the drain. Clean off all hair and debris. If the stopper is broken or its seal looks worn, replace it.

3) Face the hole at the bottom of the stopper toward the pivot rod’s location, and drop the stopper back into the drain hole. Insert the pivot rod so that it engages the hole in the bottom of the stopper, and tighten on the retaining nut with the stopper in its up position

4) Loosen the set screw on the clevis, and adjust the strap up or down so that it operates the pivot rod to open and close the stopper. Re-tighten the set

Clogged drains can be a big hassle to get moving free again. Just a few easy steps will go a long way towards keeping the water flowing down your house’s pipes.

Ways to avoid clogging drains, use a drain strainer to trap food particles and hair; collect grease in cans rather than pouring it down the drain; pour a pot of boiling water down the drain weekly to melt fat that may be building up in the drain; or weekly put some vinegar and baking soda down your drain to break down fat and keep your drain smelling fresh.

Almost all tile surfaces have grout. If your grout is not cared for it deteriorates over time and looks bad. Luckily, it is pretty easy to fix. These directions are geared toward fixing small patches of grout but it is possible to remove all of the grout in a shower or tub, for instance, and re-grout it. Here’s a list of what you’ll need to do.

Pick the grout lines that you need to be repair. Sometimes they will look crumbly, other times the grout will become completely stained.

Use a grout saw and, with a sawing motion, remove the damaged grout. At least remove the top layers of grout. Make sure that you remove all or the damaged grout. If the grout lines are too small for the grout saw you can try using a utility knife. Use a small brush to remove all or the loose grout and dust.

Its best to let the newly exposed grout dry. Give the grout another complete brushing and then fill in the joints with pre-mixed grout. You can wet your finger and use it to force the grout into the joint. Use just enough new grout to bring the grout to the level of the existing grout. Get the joint as smooth as possible and leave no gaps in the grout.

The excess grout will begin to form a whitish haze on the tile. You need to clean it up. Use a damp sponge and lightly wipe away the excess. Do not to disturb the grout in the joint. It has not set up yet and if you wipe hard across it, you will wipe the grout onto the tile. Take a cloth and polish away the excess grout.

The grout should dry for 48 hours before exposing it to moisture. It is normally best to seal the grout with a silicone grout sealer if the grout dose not have a sealer in it. Check the container to see.

After time your sink faucet can become clogged with debris that comes through your pipes. It can cause water to spray out all over the place or drop the water flow down to just a trickle. Its good to clean your aerator out from time to time and check if your washers need replacing.

First try unscrewing the aerator by hand. If you can’t remove it use pliers with tape covering the teeth so not to damage the faucet. After removing the aerator, disassemble it and lay the parts out in order to help during reassembly. Inspect the washers and if they look cracked you should replace them now. Place all the part except for the washers in white vinegar for about an hour then gently scrub away the buildup with a soft brush.

Before you reassemble make sure to run the water to flush out any loose sediment. Reassemble the aerator and screw the assembly back onto the spout. Make sure to gently snug the aerator tight with your pliers.

If this is happening trace as many water pipes as you can and look for hangers and straps that connect them to the house framing. Remove dated hangers and secure the pipes with plastic or plastic-coated straps and hangers. Where pipes go through drilled holes in the framing, stick pieces of insulation or rubber matting between the wood and the pipe.

Supply pipes make another sound that can be much more annoying called “water hammer”. It is a loud hammering noise whenever a valve is turned off, especially automatic valves in a washing machine or a dishwasher. To reduce the sound go through the previous steps to stop the sounds. If that doesn’t fix the problem, install air chambers at each loud fixture. These devices function as shock absorbers to soften the quick change in water pressure created by a faucet being turned off.
